Great podcast! good questions and interesting guest as always.

IMO the way to make tekken as popular as starcraft, is to make the game more of a "easy-to-learn, hard-to-master game"
like street fighter or poker.
I played a lot of poker before i really got into tekken. One of the reasons because poker has this huge community with mio. of players is that a beginner is able to beat a pro. in a short session. (as bigger the sample size gets the pro will of course be able to take advantage of his advanced skills)
In tekken this is still completely different, a good player will almost win every match against a beginner.
In order to get more people into the game, they should make the core/basics more important to win a round/match and expand the advanced-skill-sector for the skilled players but making it far less effective.

Wow so many comments, more than most other things on AVP. to be expected though I guess, as many people who listen to this are Street fighter players who might not even play Tekken at all but who are curious about it.

I agree that your experience can make up for lacking reflexes. "There is no knowledge that is not power." -The words of Raiden ;) For the record, I thought James Chan looked 40, lol. You know, I heard he had been in the scene for SO long, like since before SF2, and he owned arcades, etc. Plus he has a receding hairline! Oooh! I never met the guy though.

Aris what kind of telephone do you use? I think that is a good question because you were talking to LD Maxi from Korea. I imagine you do not use a cellphone.

Yeah Aris, you should write that stuff down. LDMaxi started in Japan then moved on to Korea and liked Korea so much more. Interesting. I had no idea being in Japan was like that. Korea sounds alot cooler than Japan. I remember hearing that the Sweedish embassy had something to do with the creation of Lars Alexandersson. Duck 2000, probably?

What he said about tekkencentral is interesting. So all the people using one character play against another group of players all using the same character, only a different character. Cool. Doing that in North America would be hard though, since it is so big and Seoul is only 1 city. totally thought LDMaxi was Korean until how.

"It would take a weird guy to do what you do." WTF? I would gladly trade places with LDMaxi. But from watching shows like TMZ, I get the impression that SoCal is not a good place for walking. I enjoy long walks.

I agree that SF is easier than Tekken. Fireball, Fireball, Uppercut, Fireball. I like both games though. I played SF2 World Warrior alot, like every day, when it was in the arcades. I was a SF2 fan many years before I played Tekken.

Regarding the debate on reflexes and reaction time etc... this dude is the fastest draw in the world, this shits unbelievable, and yea he's old. I agree, if all you do is live something, the time and effort you put into it will trump any age factor until you're like 80.

Question: Why are people referring to our site as AVP? Is it because of Alien Versus Predator?

@Someones Armpit, Hah, thanks.

And for the record, I don't have anything against Star Craft. I just dont play it. In fact I think its way cooler than shitty Smash Brothers.

Losing reflexes with age is garbage. Everything that was said in the podcast was dead on with that. One thing I wanted to add was that younger players have a lot of confidence in what they can 'see' on reaction and what they cannot. Young players, since they don't know any better, think they are able to see everything on reaction. As a result they are really good at guessing right and fuzzy guarding. But as they get older the law of averages kick in, and they either realize what the brain can and cannot react to and adjust accordingly, or they just simply think their reflexes are diminishing, which can't be further than the truth.

Good podcast as always.

Being an old Virtua Fighter player, I really was under the impression that the switch to Tekken would be fast and easy.
Whoa, nothing far from the true... To give you an example, in VF i could get away of not being trow by knowing the correct part when I was into risk for a trow and buffering 2 or 3 trow escapes. Now with Tekken, I have to react to and id the kind of trow and at the moment I suck big time. I have a hard time finding time to practice, because all the responsabilities, but at this point I am not sure if I will learn to break trow at all in this game.

So in few words, learning Tekken is being a very hard task right now. Maybe is the "You can't teach an old dog new tricks" thing.

Last but not least guys... I will be 47 next April and fighting games (in my tigh schedule) is about the only games that I play. Sometimes I come from the office very tired, like ready to go bed, then I get a call from my local scene... :) That is the time when I feel alive. Peace

Heta Akira

p.s. English is not my main language, just in case you see a lot of typos.
