Avoiding the Puddle Episode #16 featuring Slips and Shin

This time around I caught up with STL’s Slips and Shin to discuss their opinions of the current Tekken community compared to the days of Tag as well as many other topics. Before that, MYK and I discuss MLG’s decision to exclude Tekken from their 2011 season and the EVO line up of games this year. Hope you enjoy it.

Slips demeanor is solid old school, love the vocab - bad

Horns! that was badness

Found myself agreeing and disagreeing some with the debates between TTT to BR - but all points in their own way valid.

One thing I agree with and found myself smiling to - "people were just the fuck cooler as people back then" -

Great cast all round - I hope I get a chance to meet yous at Evo and have a game of BR with no hang ups. Fuck Portugal, South Africa in the house - 30 hours travel to see the Tran - NOT a clown! lozls

Nice podcast! Slips and Shin seem to have a bit of old-man syndrome in them, but they do make valid points. I think TTT would become ST status if Tekken scrapped its ways and used a band new engine. Kind of like after Super Turbo, Capcom just said, 'Ok we can't make this any better,' and went on with the Alpha series and 3rd Strike, so everyone went to ST if they wanted classic Street Fighter. If Tekken went the route of, I don't know something stupid like Tekken 7 Wii-Zone where everyone's gotta actually kick the screen to do shit...everyone would go back to TTT when its all said and done.

Re: Mortal Kombat at Evo

Even though the SRK community may seem elitist to some, the Evo tournaments always have had a history of giving lots of games at least one chance, even Dead or Alive 4 a couple years ago. I love that about Evo.

That said, the timing is definitely awkward, since games really need time to mature before anyone can tell how competitive they are. Soul Calibur 4 was out for quite some time before Evo, and even then, Evo did not ban Hilde, who thankfully did not dominate the tournament. It was still pretty embarrassing seeing her doomcombo on the big screen constantly though.

You guys are totally right though that MK will be amazing to watch, whether because it'll be a good game or because there will be some hilarious day-1-abuse shit on the big screen. Evo is gonna be awesome!

Re: Everyone is boring

It's so TRUE and I think "E-sports" has something to do with it. Seems like lots of people aspire to that style, but I really like the way some people use that as an opportunity for grassroots community figures really pop off, since all the super serious stuff is being taken care of by someone else.

Even on my Youtube, I'm always scared of my advertisers getting pissed at bad language and such on my videos...I feel like I'm pretty jailed in that respect :(

Call me crazy but I like fighting games where you actually fight. If I want to play tag I will go outside and play with my son.

Hey Aris, good podcast, I really enjoy listening to it!

I have question, you've shed new light on why Hilde is a unbalanced character in SC4. But all I've heard about why she's broken is because of her Doom Combo that rings all characters out. I don't know much about SC4, but can you shed some light on how you think that affects the game as well?

Brad & Shin make me miss hearing all the shit talking in STL arcades (when MO had arcades still)
