Kayane's First Hand Impressions of SC5

Legendary Soul Calibur player Kayane has gotten the opportunity to play SC5 first hand. She has written some fairly detailed information about the game at its current stage in development on her personal blog.

Thanks to Malice for the heads up.

"The Guard Impact

Le Guard Impact like in all the previous Soul Calibur: 4G or 6G doesn’t work anymore.

Now it is : 4 RT (A+B+K) only.

I tried to do 1 RT and 3 RT but no crouch GI comes out…so I suppose we cannot the lows anymore.

To do a GI is not free anymore : it will cost you a part of the Soul Gauge.

The way Armor works

It’s very similar to the system of SC4′s Critical Finish, except that you don’t directly win the round, you just have the opportunity to deal some good damage.

The more you hit your opponent’s Guard, the more his armor has a risk to break. So the different colors blinking are used to warn the player ( so you know when it starts blinking yellow, then red, you have to watch out).

When you break his armor, the opposing character does the same animation as in SC4 before he can do the Critical Finish, there is a big slowdown.

You then have the time to do a Critical Edge or a big combo, and so on…"

Oh man, nobody gives a fuck about what a chicks thinks of SCV. What does she have, like a PS3 in her kitchen or something???

The system changes sound interesting.

New GI must be there to eliminate the 'GI wars' and require more thought to apply.

I am excited about this game. Sounds pretty good. I prefer the tekken notation. lol @ Jack Daniels

@Jack Daniels she's been a top SC player since SC1. She seemed nice and friendly when I met her, there's no need for the hate she keeps getting from some areas.

The report made SCV sound very interesting. There's seems like a real attempt at innovation and borrowing of 2d game elements. The change to GI is weird but taken together with the new system mechanics maybe it'll make sense or maybe it'll change again. I like the mind games and skill suggested by Just Defense and the increase in speed and improved step is very welcome. I hope Namco lives up to their promise to support the game post release with balancing/glitch removal, that'll have to make up for a lack of arcade beta testing.

Sup Kayane,

Awesome flying back from Evo with you - hope the head cushion thingy I got you is still working. lol

Jesus, reading that article you sure had quite a bit of exposure to the game.
In all honesty the stuff that they released @ Evo didn't make me want to pick up and play SC5 again - but that art work of Mitsu might help.

Hope they get more Maxi info in the time to come -

thanks for the write up

Daishi just posted more details to follow up on what Kayane mentioned. You can go here for a rundown.

I also thought the change to GI was weird, but now I find out that it uses 25% of meter and GIs all highs, mids, and lows which means that people will actually use meter and not just hoard it for CE moves.
