KOR: "TTT2 Needs to be Changed to 3/5 Tournament Standard"

Top US Tekken competitor KOR disrelishes one major aspect of his Tekken related travels: randomness. KOR wrote an article in facebook outlining his reasonings for his want for the change. Petition to Change the Tournament Standard on Tekken Tag Tournament 2

Why I feel Tekken Tag Tournament 2 should be changed to a 3/5 Tournament Standard, Just like UMVC3.

Just like every game out there, players put their heart into practicing, their money into traveling, and their time into becoming the best; as a competitive gamer there is nothing more than I would like is to see a return on the time I put into gaming. 

That return is simple, winning.  I can speak for the FGC when I say, it surely is disheartening to travel 5 miles to over 1000 miles, pay to enter a tournament and then lose in the most non-gratifying way as possible.  

This change to a better format will yield more players to attend tournaments and events, the love for the game and the urge to compete and become the best is leveled fairly and not heavily favored in an unfavorable play style.

For those who may believe that is a plea or an excuse of top players for losing, you’re wrong.  I’ve been to several TTT2 majors, gotten this opinion from novice to intermediate to top players, spoken to international players, and have studied the game in and out.  This opinion is strong within our community, I have been playing for over 7 years and no Tekken in the past has needed this change until now.

I feel tournament organizers should implement 3/5 games as a tournament standard for TTT2.  My reasons are the following:

  • Tekken has always had smaller turnouts in numbers in comparison to that of UMVC3 and SF4 AE, and even other Capcom and Namco games.  The 3/5 game standard would not run longer than any other 2D game [even when run at 2/3].
  • Surely the rounds are 80 seconds, and could last a long time, but also can be found on the other end of the spectrum with matches running by so fast.  The 3 games can be over with as little as 9 full combos and a mix-up.
  • Combo damage is just too high in TTT2, as simple as a couple of hits and then one launch to Tag Assault and then wall combo can be the end of the round (without being able to even hit the tag button), and with more moves leading to a combo potential- Tekken players know this, and when it does happen, you know you never lost to the player, but to the game.  This is not what it means to be competitive fighting pro gamer. 
  • The momentum of the game can shift so fast, away from you, just like UMVC3.  it’s not about option selection like Street Fighter, there is not ONE clear cut answer to every situation, there are several.  A player who plays without fear, calculation or knowledge is in a complete gamble of his win, it could work out for him or it could completely throw him into a loss; the other competitor is playing extremely cautious because of knowledge and calculation but falls to a launcher and loses a round, having to play catch up with the life.  Tekken was never this risky, and even with two characters, the risk factor is weighted heavily on the player who plays without fear, knowledge and calculation.
  • Tekken is a game of calculation, adaptation, sometimes taking necessary risk without much reward, and taking unnecessary risk for much reward.  Some call it the chess of fighting games.  I think a game with such an element of intellect should be played at a set which displays the finer talent of the competitors rather than who can find openings for a launch.
  • We want the scene to grow and 2/3 game format is killing off our established players, which in turn, is slowly diminishing the amount of new players to step in the scene.  Established players know how to play, and when they lose in such a manor, their morale to continue on falls strongly.  We need our players to feel they were not cheated out of a win.
  • Tournament organizers should want a 3/5 tournament format for Tekken.  You have better matches, more rewarded victories, you have players coming back for a taste of vengeance rather than players who feel that the state of the game is not worth their time.

I honestly feel just like how tournaments like Major League Gaming, Kumite in Tennessee [KIT] who have implemented a 3/5 tournament standard for Tekken Tag 2, more tournaments would be worth attending.  It is a law of statistics though that smaller sets will be more random. 

We can pay to travel and join with the peace of mind that we will lose because we didn’t adapt in time, not because we lost to the game system, and walk away with knowing why I lost, and how to come back stronger.

Let’s try to keep the scene alive, get more players to attend and play a fair game.  Let’s make our tournaments more exciting where the strongest players will make it to the end and the perpetual valor to continue traveling and become the best in this competitive game a force.

You know what, if anyone (including Kor or Imfamousminded) really want to make the point that there is a system-wide problem with 2/3, what they need to do is point out multiple examples of high-level tournament sets (which can be found on YT or whatever) where a "worse" player beat the "better" players due to randomness, as well as analyze how the "better" players deserved to win despite losing at least six rounds. Because otherwise its very hard to buy into this philosophy when Korea and Japan (which are the two strongest countries for Tekken and have had TT2 for over a year now) don't run 3/5 and didn't run it for BR either.

It would be a lot more interesting and informative than hearing "3/5 is very necessary" and "This has always been the standard" (even though the whole point of Kor's petition is to CHANGE the standard) again and again.

All the Biggest Tournament in Europe (UT, Maxdamagermany, Tekken-Italia etc) are all FT3, Finals depending on the Tourney are FT3, 4 or 5. There's also a Double Elimination Bracket starting after the Group phase. So Kor's request doesn't seem that strange to me.

The format should be whatever is popular in the region, not set by any one self proclaimed expert. If Koreans like 2/3 and enjoy seeing people get 1-shotted by Paul, fine. If Americans like longer matches and turtle games, fine.

The damage not nearly as bad as previous games. 1 CH combo in T5 could spell death. That being said, Namco should add a health mod option for those events that want more health. I'd be ok with a 10% drop in damage across the board.

And 2/3 rounds so kids don't get bored? Sorry, but you Ritalin popping A.D.D. casuals can suck it. You already have a comeback mechanic to shorten the rounds, called "Rage/Netsu".

If that's not enough, A) go play a casual game or B) get serious. Tekken is one of the only hardcore fighters left and if you can't deal with it, DOA >>>>> that way.

Wow infamousminded, you're simply incapable of rational argument. I haven't seen one worthwhile point out of you in 5 pages of comments. All you do is try to discredit people with slander. To be honest at this point you're hurting your argument way more then you're helping it.

@Cosmic Forge: "Comeback mechanic to shorten the rounds" Um, you might wanna think that through. Comeback mechanics help people make comebacks, making matches longer. Rage/Netsu dissuades the attacker from abusing their health advantage and throwing out unsafe moves. It forces them to be more defensive and wait out the rage.

Other then that I have no problem with your argument. Just remember that Virtua Fighter's hardcore depth didn't help it become a successful fighter at all.

just imagine playing against the KOR and defeat him. After that he throws this note saying explicitly that does not accept losing to inexperienced players. I imagine you would feel offended. If a player does not feel comfortable with the rules he is not required to attend the event. More belittle other competitors imposing their superiority even in defeat is ridiculous. KOR vai crying in bed is warm place.

Hi! I just happen to stumble in this news. Come on! tourneys in tekken should not take that long because its a tournament. For me 2/3 is enough. Rule is a rule, every tourneys will have their own rules and you have to play by that as a competitive player.:D

For the new comers in tekken, should have a mind set that you are not gonna play to win. Keep in mind that you're gonna play to learn. Even in tourneys! You have to make that count as a thought. LEARN! If you loose, at least you learned that you have to practice more. Its a good mantra as a player so you won't get frustrated. Don't make the excuse that the game has full of bullshit and randomness. Don't blame the game, blame yourself for getting hit by that random move or its not a random move after all, you just got baited and you gave in to that and got hit. Play wisely. :D

As maybe for Cor not having enough chances to adapt in the match, maybe you shouldn't let your opponent adapt to you by playing 2 different characters in your team. Seriously, playing Bob/Slim Bob is a big risk because the way you play them is gonna be the same after you tag in your partner.

Don't let your ego get the better of you. Considering you're a vet player and you lost to a random player. Don't call him a scrub! Give him a chance and compliment him for playing a good game. Always keep in mind that every game is good and a way to level up your game even if you loose. Playing against a vet or a casual player, either the two you will always gonna learn something from them. Even if you loose.

TTT2 is a great game! I love it! I have to thank Namco for creating a fantastic over all balanced game! If you loose, you loose! Its is a fighting game! I know loosing doesn't feel good after all the practice you've gone through. But its the way it is, you learned something from that, even if its little knowledge. At least its a gain. :D Don't quit tekken! thats how the community is going to get bigger! Play wisely and play to learn! Now that is a competitive player! :D PEACE!
