Tekken 7 will NOT have Invincibles

Eventhubs just posted an interview they had with Harada where he revealed that Tekken 7 will in fact not be bringing back the Invincibles seen in Tekken Revolution. You can see the full interview below.

EventHubs: Harada said that Catalina would be a character that beginners would find easy to use. But by that what is he referring to exactly? Does he mean that she'd have fewer moves than some of the other fighters, so beginners won't have to memorize as much when picking her up? In what sense will she be easier to play?

Katsuhiro Harada (interpreted through Michael Murray): It's not so much about the number of techniques. For people who know how to play Tekken, they'd know to try out different strings, right? Like Left Kick, Right Punch or something like that.

But for beginners, they're not going to think to try out these combinations. We've noticed that many beginners would just jam on the buttons -- usually something like Left Kick, Left Kick, Left Kick or Right Punch, Right Punch, Right Punch.

For Catalina, she will have strings that comprise entirely of repeated presses of the same button. So that when they're jamming on the buttons, at least there will be some cool and flashy moves that will come out.

So in that sense Catalina will be easier to play, and [serve as] at the very least a foothold in the door.

EventHubs: In Tekken Revolution, for the first time fully invincible moves were introduced into the series, as opposed to the partially invincible High Crush and Low Crush move properties. Do you plan on including fully invincible moves in Tekken 7? We hear that these do not sit very well with stance characters who cannot block while in stance...

Harada: In general, elements from Tekken Revolution, such as fully invincible moves, will be not included in Tekken 7.

EventHubs: Since the location tests for Tekken 7 are coming up very soon, is there anything you could comment on with regards to system mechanics?

(Note: during the Mad Catz TGS stream, Harada did mention that there will be two new system mechanics in Tekken 7, after all)

Harada: Unfortunately, not at the moment. I would love for everyone to see the mechanics with their own eyes during the location test period.

EventHubs: What about existing mechanics like Bound and Rage? Could you comment on if they will be returning in Tekken 7?

Harada: ...For that, please look forward to finding out during the location tests.

The catalina thing is a relief to hear. Literally only affects people who are new to fighting games without hurting anyone else. I was worried she was gonna have some weird combo system for noobs lol

So this game is basically turning into Dead or Alive?

FUCK Harada, I knew that cunt would fuck this game up! The difficulty of execution is a huge factor in how good a character is. If n00bs can get out huge combos by just pressing the same buttons, and basically never drop a combo, that is indeed a really big advantage!

Hope they balance it out by making the last move really punishable on block or something like that.

Also, it disturbes me that THIS is what Harada thinks is difficult with Tekken. It seems like he hasen't understood anything about what is actually wrong with Tekken. Let med spell it out loud to you;

IT'S THE HUGE NUMBER OF CHARACTERS, THEIR 200+ MOVES AND ALL THE RANDOM BULLSHIT-PROPERTIES THOSE MOVES HAVE, THAT YOU JUST HAVE TO "KNOW" SOMHOW. GET RID OF THAT CLUSTERFUCK FIRST!!

YOU FUCKING JAPANESE CUNT!!!!!!

As long as the easy combos are not max damage and don't have the best properties

My main is Steve. Using him requires really strong movement and his moveset requires more precision than most other characters. Many of my peers do not play Tekken and I want people to play it with IN PERSON... I am glad they are putting in these characters because it will make the game accessible to newcomers. This game has more than 6 different ways of rolling around and getting up off of the ground,... Tekken confuses the shit out of new players.

Trying to learn these long complex strings distracts new players from the fundamentals.. specifically movement.

Wow so much hate from some of these ATP fans! Why are you guys so angry, are you guys having a period! Dudes it just a game, and sadly games do come to an end, I remember Command and Conquer back in the day, man that game was tight! But yes not sure if have a person just press a button three times will bring in new comers. I personally think Tekken at the point of entry is Noob friendly, any idiot can button mash and have fun. I think this game needs to just reduce the roster, perhaps, just perhaps reduce the move list for most characters to about 90 and perhaps add an in depth tutorial to train people how to get off the floor, movement etc. Again I'm not hating on the tekken gods, they have made 6
8 games (including the tags too!) so it shall be good, but will it bring in new blood? Me personally I've had enough of tekken tag 2 and perhaps tekken in general, I will buy tekken 7 to help the cause continue to watch ATP live and subscribe, but tekken needs to shape up. Or perhaps Aris just needs to play and talk about street fighter 4 ;)

Cunty Mc Cunt's name properly describes him. Catalina doesn't get "huge combos by button mashing". You don't even play Tekken, do you, Cunt? Don't you know mashable strings either have a duckable high, a parryable low or an unsafe mid, or various combinations of all? You think Harada would just make a character win tournaments by mashing buttons? We all know what obvious flaws Catalina will have from the get-go. Gimmicky predictable strings which are rubbish if not properly used. Nina, Hwoarang, Baek and Anna have those. Do they turn Tekken into shit? No, they don't. As a matter of fact, at least 3 of these are Tekken icons.

Furthemore, Harada has tried putting fundamentally easy characters before, like Leo, Lars, Bob and Alisa. I mean, Bob, what the hell? You're angry at Catalina when we already have somebody as good in every way as Bob?! It doesn't get any more basic than Lars either. What he's trying to do here is not to change the difficulty of the entire game and tone it down to noob town.

What he's doing is tweaking the mechanics slightly to make it easier for a Joey Joe Joe to understand (as we will see this weekend at the location tests) and by implementing a character which is easy to press buttons and make something flashy come out to keep people who don't want to learn the game entertained and make them play more. The player with the better fundamentals will always eventually space scrubby Catalinas out and punish them severely.

Not saying Catalina will be trash, but a trash player is always trash with any character.

Start using your head. I will take great pleasure in obliterating Catalina scrubs with my well spaced electrics and proper punishments with Devil Jin.

I look forward to the location tests this weekend. I want Tekken 7 to try doing crazy shit. I don't care about losing bound or ground pick ups or changing the combo system to multiple stuns like Soul Calibur or whatever. I want something new, but familiar. Still Tekken, but not Tekken 5 all over again, even though it is probably my favorite game of the series.

Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at 1:59 PM | Unregistered CommenterOcelot

Ocelot, are you a fucking retard or just pretending to be?? Calling character like Hwoarang and Baek basic and easy just shows you're completely out of touch of why Tekken is dying! Leo, Bob, Nina etc aren't easy nor basic. Actually stanceheavy chars like Hwo and Baek are the most difficult in the game to use.

And if Hwo and Baek already are like Catalina, like you are saying, why the hell would Harada even be putting in Catalina to the roster. It's obvious he's trying a different approach, and that is making a real combo only from punch, punch punch, kick kick kick, like he said himself in the interview!

And yes, it is chars like Hwo and Baek an Nina that turned Tekken into shit. Chars with 200+ moves that have a billion properties you just have to 'know' about, like when and where to flashduck a high, sidestep whichever way, or block a invisible low, is the real reason people just think Tekken is a clusterfuck!!

These characters more so than any other, even if they also, can produce immense amount of bullshit that people are just tired of. And that is killing Tekken. And that is what cunts like you and Harada don't understand!

The problem is that newcomers don't care about playstyle at all they gravitate towards appareance, pick a character, then stick with it out of spite until they drop out of the game. 9 out of 10 people will not pick Catalina, or any other character, based on their playstyle or ease of use. It's just an utopia and looking from the wrong viewpoint where a person goes to an arcademachine, asks the pro's which character(s) are easy to use, and pick those based on the advice they get, and try to actually learn the game. Will the game itself even have an indicator of what characters ARE easy to use? Hell VF4 had that 10 years ago. If you really want to go down this road

1) The most popular characters should be the ones easiest to use. This would lead into a n00bification of certain castmembers most probably. For instance this is probably why Tekken has so few female players. When female players approach the game they want an avatar to be like them and all the easy to use characters are really male.

2) The character(s) should still be valid in high level play. Maybe thinks like a JFSR and so on which you only care about later on. Problem is that easy to use characters are pretty much a nightmare in Tekken (bob, lars, jinpachi comes to mind).

3) Why not make it so that nomatter which character you pick fun stuff happens if you mash buttons? It doesn't have to be effective, it just has to look graphically powerful and good. Remember that friend you had that loved playing eddy in t3?

4) Combo system should have dial-a-combos similar to marvel. Launch to 11 22 33 or so on. This should be a combo that's not optimized in damage (not far travel and maybe 75% of maxcombo) but is generalized across the cast. This would encourage people to try out more characters (and playstyles) instead of this basically just being an expert level thing when you truelly understand the system.

5) Tuturials and so on of course and a game that indicates what the hell is going on. Why should a newcomer know that jabs are advantage on block, lows with staggerblock are heavy launch punishable, what even their launchers are etc. It should always be clear why they lost. Streetfighter is great at this and/or decieving the player to think they understand why they lost. If you don't understand why you're loosing then you feel stress and uncomfortable in turn cause you're in a situation out of your control and keep doing the same errors over and over until you quit.

6) What really should be adressed are pointed efforts of what newcomers feel is frustrating about the game such as
throws are cheap (leads to habits of ducking and playing the game wrong out of frustration)
combos do to much damage (not understanding punishment of and avoidance of their opponents launchers)
don't understand lateral movement or how to stop it (why didn't that hit? how can I do the same?)
you just run away (doesn't understand that the core of the fighting is movement and getting whiffs, want to fight upclose)
hopkicks are great / cheap (goes back to frustration against throws and not properly learning things like lowparry from the game at a beggining level, two in one solution against being thrown and getting attacked by lows as an optionselect combined with just guarding)

etc etc
