Tekken 7 - Regarding the Change to the Sidestepping

Tekken 7 is the latest game in the franchise and in this sort of gaming climate where fighting game developers are taking into consideration the accessibility of their titles, there's always bound to be several system wide changes that not everyone will be familiar with. For Tekken 7, there's several noticeable changes that can be observed for the sake of making the game more accessible to players. Such as the revamp of the Oki system allowing players to easily get up from the ground to the tweaked damage scaling in combos or the generic throw break change as well as the additions of Power Crushes and Rage Arts. There's another of which of these changes it's regarding the side stepping in the system. Now as we may remember, early reports came out after Tekken 7's launch and players were noticing that the sidestepping in the game was made weaker compared to the previous Tekken games. Harada at Final Round this year described the change as 'We made tweaks to the side steps but the side walking wasn't really touched on' - What I'm personally curious is as to what the players feel about this change. For this topic, I went ahead and asked whoever I could on how they feel about the game and you can read all about it below.

▌Opinions/Thoughts on the Sidestep Change

From Korea, Help Me:

My friend talked with Helpme and he said that :

Moi : How is Tekken 7? Better than you thoughts?
Help_Me !! : Movement is improve. But Sidestep is weak
Moi : Like Tekken 6?

Help_Me !! : More. And side Step has delayed when we First moving. I think like 3~4frame.

It doesn't work to guard like When devil use b f 212, Left side Step guard. No working always hit

Moi : Green Arcade have only Tekken 7 cabinets? or are there still some players playing TTT2?

Help_Me !! : Green still play ttt2. T7 too expensive, more than Japan
Moi : i reallly don't know if i will play this game

Help_Me !! : I think you don't like this game.
Moi : oh, you think so?
Help_Me !! : Because we don't like this game. Haha

Moi : Really ? Why?
Help_Me !! : Jdcr was demoted 13dan, vs someone Random player. He crash cabinet.
Moi : hahaha he should be very angry

Help_Me !! : One of best move of Jdcr doesn't work. Sidestep guard. Haha. Ah I go to bed.

From Australia, Dion: (Recently went to Korea to play Tekken 7 and even got on Knee's Tekken stream)

It's not as good

Moves start tracking you

Things I know I can step I can no longer step

Spoke with koreans

They said, no long dd ss, you need to dn and then block

It's extremely hard

I stoped my ss game

Made some chars stronger such as lili

she had weak tracking

Question: What do you think about the change? Good or bad for the game?

Well I meet all the top players

Now there's def chance for everyone to play on top level

You die extremely fast

Jdcr and help me gets owned by randoms all the time now

mind game is much easier

From Japan, YOU who is apart of KYSG: (He sort of went off tangent...)

For me, TTT2 is completely better than T7. T7's all changes are not good for me. Poor new characters, poor system changes...

At first, on that point (new players), I agreed on it. But now,... I have different opinion. Because of this online system...weak players

weak players matches automatically with weak (new) players.
So in case of the old side step system, I think,on its point, nothing different.

And...in my opinion... Only a few players newly start to play this game.
The players who play this game on arcade are the old tekken players

Can you imagine the new players who play on arcade by paying too much money?
The fighting game era was already ended.

I think, namco should release console version as soon as possible.
That's the best way to increase players...

"New player can now beat old player' because of side step change"
This event itself is ...good for tekken communities.

Side step change itself, I think, not so bad change.
Because side step guard is too strong on T6/TTT2.
Many players said, Tekken is very difficult

Tekken is a lot of fun to play!!! But... too difficult because of few safe movement.
Even 10 frame jab... it is not safe!!!

and... I believe...tekken online is too stressful...that's all.

All I want to say is ....T7 is boring.
See you!

Fujinao from Japan:

I wish increase TEKKEN PLAYER.
So I accept side step changed.

Karei from Japan:

I think this change is good.
Because tekken is  the game for not only senior players but also beginners.

Lateral motion [sidestep] made gap of player skills.
There is a new mutual reading in tekken7, so it's so fun for many tekken players!

Payopayo84 from Japan:

Hi, basically I do not like the change.  It's kind of awkward the character does not really "move"  even though he is side stepping.

However, I understand it was unavoidable change since some of top players were abusing, so to say, the system with "side step & guard" etc.

The player would have intense stress when his character's moves whiffed, and that continuously.  So the change may resolve this problem.

Kuro Kuro from Japan:

私は、変更を希望しないです。
今の鉄拳7が良いと思います。

I don't want anything changed.

Tekken 7 as it is now, I think is good.

Murata from Japan:

僕は2500回鉄拳しました。
答えは今の横移動は良いと思います。何故なら強いプレイヤーと弱いプレイヤーの差が縮まった。けれども横移動はきちっと使えば効果的だからです!

I have played over 2,500 games on Tekken 7.

My thoughts right now is that the change to the sidestep is good. Because the gap between a strong Tekken player and a weak Tekken player is further shortened. However, sidestepping is still usable if used precisely!

Lhasa (He went to Korea and got the chance to play the game and talk with their players.)

The top players getting owned by randoms
i still reserve judgment on what thats actually a symptom of speaking generally
Yeah that was the weirdest thing in korea man , was so odd like taking my western buddies to hangout with saint and help me a while on the cabs and being like yeah check these guys out theyre the best...
and then seeing them get wrecked by some random unranked guy on matchmaking

Question: would you say for the series that this change was for the better?

ties into what ive just seen there from harada
it means it has a lower skill ceiling
and can engage a larger player base more easily i guess for $$$
like SF4 did or watever
so makes me think there is a more compressed skill gap
rather than the top players not adapting well
basically what everyone was dreading
but in a very masked way

Topic: I rarely hear about the american players in US events complain about it, when they got the chance to play it

yeah see, western players? didnt even notice
SS is the system that mid skill players never fully get
western players dont SS much or barely even understand it - where as asians depend on it for their bread and butter setups

like how many western players know which way to step every move in tt2
pretty much every asian player will know off the top of their heads.

Translation:

Guy: "please change sidestepping back like it used to be" [in Tekken 7]

Harada: "I would be glad too if that meant that more players will play [Tekken 7], the player community in different countries accept/agree with the change and the amount the game will sell will do better. From now, since the development cost of further continued sequels in the series isn't guaranteed - If it were to be guaranteed with the sidestep change then I'd be able to put it back.

This is a difficult thing to consider and It's not just a simple thing to respond too."

Golden rule:

So what does everyone else think of the change to the sidesteps in Tekken 7? Did you manage to play it when the game was available in some of the US tournament recently? I'd love to hear some thoughts!
